Body:
Hello,
We are now accepting registration for the XX<WINTER,SUMMER,FALL>XX term Physics and Astronomy Student Machine Shop (SMS) Course. The course is a requirement in order to gain access to the Student Machine Shop facility located in Hennings 224. The SMS course and facility are opened to all students, staff & faculty. The main objective of the course is to teach how to safely use the machine tools found in the SMS facility: lathe, mill, drill press, band saw, etc. Once you pass the course, you will be allowed access to the machine shop using your UBC ID card. If you need help or have any technical questions, the technicians of the mechanical shop are available Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm.
Course Information
We believe that the best way to learn is through practice, therefore, the course is almost entirely hands-on. You will learn basic machining skills by tackling three different projects: a bottle opener, a toolbit box, and a waterproof matchbox. The course consists of 10 sessions (or modules) of 3h45min each and is broken down like so:
- Introduction
- Bottle Opener – Part 1 & 2
- Toolbit Box
- Matchbox – Part 1, 2, & 3
- Project – up to 3 sessions
The course will be given twice in two different formats. Both formats cover the same material, but at a different pace.
